Crieff has always been a food town. The cattle drovers who converged on this place for centuries, the bakery family that has been on the High Street since 1830, the distillery that has been making whisky since 1763. The food culture here did not start this week. But this week it gets a proper stage.

The Crieff Food & Drink Festival runs from 10th to 18th October. Nine days of events across the town - masterclasses, tastings, competitions, dining experiences and a Scottish Artisan Market that brings nearly thirty producers from across Scotland to The Steading on the opening Saturday. Here is how the week unfolds.

We can get into it or you can just click here to book!

Saturday 10th October - the opening day

The festival opens with the Scottish Artisan Food & Drink Market at The Steading on Broich Road. Free entry, live music all day, face painting for the kids and refreshments inside throughout. 10am to 4pm. Free entry. Come and find something you did not know you needed.

Nearly thirty producers have made the journey to be here. From the food stalls:

Also on Saturday, The Pig in the Bank on the High Street is hosting the Auld Alliance wine tasting - Scotland meets France, a guided tasting paired with small plates. And JL Gill kicks off their daily festival tasting series with Glenturret Whisky from 12pm.

Monday 12th October

Two very different evenings happening on King Street.

Delivino is launching its new Sicilian-inspired menu with an exclusive six-course Taste of Italy dinner. Be one of the first to try it.

And at Campbell's Bakery, Iain Campbell - seventh-generation master baker, same family since 1830 - is opening the bakehouse for an intimate evening to watch him make shortbread the way his family has always made it. Wine, nibbles and warm shortbread to take home.

Tuesday 13th October

LOGOS Youth Project opens its doors for a free drop-in baking workshop for young people in the afternoon.

That evening, Caroline from Oak Homeopathy hosts a Kombucha & Fermented Nibbles Masterclass - learning to brew, flavour and make non-alcoholic probiotic cocktails. A fascinating insight into fermentation and gut health.

Wednesday 14th October

The busiest day of the festival!

The team at Fish in Crieff are teaching people how to fillet a fish and shuck shellfish in thirty minutes. It is free and it will change how you look at a fishmonger's counter.

That afternoon, Cook & Connect host a relaxed cookery session at Crieff Community Campus for the over-60s - Minestrone Soup and Scottish Scones, new skills and good company for just £5.

That evening, chef Sam Heeney-Governo hosts A Taste of Love to Cook - Portuguese Pastéis de Nata and a seasonal one-pan dinner, with every penny of the ticket price going to free community cooking classes through Crieff Connexions.

And at 8.30pm The Tower hosts a Food & Drink Pub Quiz. Free. No booking. Just turn up knowing things about food.

Thursday 15th October

From 5pm on the High Street, LOGOS and Sirple Games are running simultaneous pizza evenings - make your own at LOGOS or grab pizza slices and gaming at Sirple Games on East High Street. Both free.

And at 6pm Emily and Andrew from Ems & Co open their King Street kitchen for an exclusive Afternoon Tea Patisserie Masterclass. Former head pastry chef and head chef from Cromlix. You leave with a box of everything you made.

Friday 16th October

Harrisons Fine Wines on King Street is teaming up with Ems & Co for a Fizz & Pastries afternoon - sparkling wine and handcrafted pastries from Emily. Free, all afternoon, no booking needed.

That evening, one of Scotland's most celebrated Indian chefs comes to Crieff Food Co for one night only. Praveen Kumar cooks with fresh locally sourced ingredients, drawing on his upbringing in southern India. An exclusive curry night that has been one of the most anticipated events of the festival.

Saturday 17th October

G's Bistro does Oktoberfest. Bratwurst, cold beer and a proper autumn afternoon from 12pm to 4pm. The kind of event that does not need much more selling than that.

Sunday 18th October

The festival closes in two places at once.

In James Square, the Grand Bake Off - judged by Ems & Co head pastry chef Emily - and the Whisky Sauce Off in partnership with JL Gill. Bring your best bake or your secret whisky sauce recipe.

And at 3pm at The Glenturret, the Whisky & Lalique Chocolate Pairing. Scotland's oldest working distillery. Two Michelin stars next door. One hour. World-class single malt paired with hand-crafted chocolates from the Lalique culinary team. Strictly limited.

All week across the town

Beyond the ticketed events, the whole town gets involved.

The Pig in the Bank has seasonal small plates specials, wine flights and cocktails with Inchaffray Whisky all week. Craobh is serving its Scottish Smorgasbord for Two daily until 3.30pm. The Square Bar & Kitchen has a tapas and spritz festival deal all week. Restaurant 1891 at Crieff Golf Club has a festival special burger. The Tower has its Food Challenge on the menu exclusively for festival week.

JL Gill has free daily tasting sessions all week - a different theme every day from Glenturret whisky to Scottish gin to Morrison Distillers. Gordon & Durward are offering free tastings of their handmade tablet, fudge and macaroon throughout. Harrisons Fine Wines has daily wine tastings every day. And Crieff Hydro is serving the Strathearn Spritz across all its bars - Orangecello or Limoncello made with the new 1881 Cellos.
