From Roman Ruins to Wreath-Making: A Banner Year for Innerpeffray Library

As the frost settles over the Earn, the famous doors at Innerpeffray Library have closed for their winter hibernation. But don’t let the quiet fool you; behind those historic stone walls, the team is busy reflecting on a record-breaking year and preparing for a very "accessible" surprise in March.

Here is the lowdown on what’s been happening at Scotland’s oldest lending library - and why we think you should be excited for their spring return.

A Record-Breaking Year for the History Books

2025 was, quite literally, one for the books. Innerpeffray welcomed a record number of visitors from all corners of the globe, proving the lure of ancient pages and Perthshire tranquility is truly universal.

Among the highlights:

A "New" Old Home: Thanks to a generous anonymous donation, the Library was able to purchase and "rehome" several books belonging to the Murray family of Dollerie House, keeping local history right where it belongs.

Exhibitions & Collaborations: Their Book Marking exhibition provided a fascinating glimpse into how people have scribbled in their books through the ages. They even teamed up with Perth Museum, contributing several treasures to the Macbeth exhibition.

Festive Finales: The year wrapped up with magical music, including the Afternoon for Advent and the Friends’ Carols in the Chapel.

A "Beechgrove" Legend Lends a Hand

The Library team were particularly thrilled with the success of their Woodland Wreath workshops. These were led by the incredible Gwyneth Hardy - the long-time Producer/Director of The Beechgrove Garden. Gwyneth donated her time, materials, and expertise, helping the events raise over £1,000 to support the Library’s work.

Coming Soon: "A Place in the Past"

The Library re-opens on 1st March 2026, and they are debuting something rather special. Work is currently underway on "A Place in the Past" - a brand-new accessible seating area and viewpoint at the entrance to the site.

This isn't just a place to rest your legs; it’s a portal to history. It will share information on the Roman heritage of Strathearn and the amazing local wildlife found at Innerpeffray. Designed by the same team behind the Heritage Trail, it’s been made possible through various community-led local development funds and grants.

Missing the Library?

If you’re feeling the "closed season" blues, you can still visit from your sofa. The Library has shared a beautiful, wintry short film by the award-winning Mousehole Films on their website - the next best thing to being there.

We can't wait to see that new viewpoint (and those old books) come March!
